My journey into motherhood began when I was 17 years old. Today, I am the mother of two boys, ages 15 and 12, teach writing at the local university (my alma mater), freelance write, help run a non profit organization and I’m currently working on two books. I also speak to teen moms motivating them and arming them with the tools they need to become empowered and successful so that they can begin to redefine the teen mom statistic.
Of course as a teenage mom everyone expected me to blow it…and to all who did: IN YO FACE!
Unlike many of the other “mommybloggers” out there that are writing chronological entries about their infants and toddlers milestones, I’m writing about what NO ONE wants to write about!! TWEENS AND TEENS!! Oh, and boys at that! And yes, they are aware of the fact that I write about them, and they think it’s pretty cool! In fact, I’m not your typical mommy blogger. I write stories. My stories are candid, poignant, humorous, and they are always real.
The truth is, I have no idea what I am doing, and most of the time, I doubt and question myself as a mother; everything I say and everything I do. And this has nothing to do with being a teen mom but EVERYTHING to do with being a MOM. I don’t claim to be an expert in motherhood, and quite frankly, I don’t understand how anybody can, but I do know that my parenting philosophy is a pretty damn good one. Open, honest, no-holds barred communication where no topic is off limits and ultimately leads to the fact that my boys can come to me with anything and can ask me anything…for as uncomfortable as it may be at times.
So these are my stories about my stumbles through parenthood, raising two young men in what I think is an ever-growing “girly-girl” world where more guys know how to pluck their eyebrows better than I can, and less guys know how to screw a damn screw!
